Snail Breeding Technology - VAS Escargots
The breeding of snails Helix Aspersa Maxima is done using a French technology (seasonal open-air breeding). The farm consists of external parks or the so called feeding fields where the new baby snails are brought in in May and are collected in October.
Watering. Snails like humid environment and for this purpose there is a watering system which guarantees constant soil moist and air humidity in the farm.
Snail Feeding. The farm land is cropped with white clover, which is the main source of food for the snails in the first two weeks of their life. After these two weeks, a special fodder, which gives all the necessary nutritional substances for the snails' good growth, is given to them every evening.
Snail Growth. Snails of the type Gros Gris (helix Aspersa Maxima) reach maturity for about 5-6 months –weighing 30mg in the beginning they reach 25-30g after the fifth month. It is of essential importance for the good condition of the snails not only to be the in a humid environment, but also not to be exposed to direct sunlight during the hot summer days. As they are bred outdoors and because of the lack of natural shadow shelters special wooden shadow devices shall be made and located all around the farm where the snails can find some freshness.
Snail Collecting. The collecting process is done in the end of September or the beginning of October. The snails are collected in nets and are placed in dry premises with constant airing. This is necessary to be done for the snails cleaning before hibernation. After this the snails are placed in special refrigerators where they hibernate.
